A transcript allows your homeschool student to have a record of all their school work for any possible reference in the future. This would come in handy for legal matters as well as college admissions later in life. By being a responsible homeschool teacher and creating a transcript each academic year, you will have a much easier time if you homeschool student decides to attend a regular college later on. Here are some tips to create appropriate transcripts.
Find a Formal Transcript Template
Having an example of what you are expected to produce can clarify what you need to record. A regular transcript will include data on the student, the school, the courses taken, the credits for each course, and the grades for the course work. One section will highlight the total credits earned in the academic year along with Grade Point Average or GPA.
Some may include the attendance as well as the date of graduation. The last bit will have a signature block of the homeschooling parent complete with date of when the transcript was completed.
Creating Course Names, Calculating Credits and Assigning Grades
First keep a track of all the material that the homeschool student is covering. This will ensure that you are able to group the topics into a proper course. Now assign a number of credits that each course will earn the student. Based on the performance of the student in assignments and tests, assign a grade per course that has been covered.
It is a good idea to have a grade scale as part of the transcript so that the person viewing the one page document can get a quick and clear idea about how the homeschool student is doing in each course.
Make Constant Records and Enter Them Accurately
Don’t wait till the end of the year to start creating the homeschool transcript. Make it a habit to feed in the records for the homeschool student regularly in a single location. This can be used as the basis of creating the final transcript. Do remember that not all students will have all fields at all grade levels, so stay flexible in your records.
