For those of us privileged to live a comfortable life, it is easy to ignore those who are less fortunate than us. Since the existence of the homeschool student is so carefully monitored by the homeschool parent, it may be possible to mollycoddle them. To keep them protected from the harsh realities of what life can often be like. If a homeschool teacher does this, it is a great disservice to the homeschooled child.
Rights and Duties
Just as much as the homeschool student needs to be taught about their rights, they should also be made aware of their duties. Yes it is alright for them to listen to music when they have free time, as long as none of their other siblings is trying to study in the same room. The idea that one needs to be concerned about other people needs to take root in their young minds. They should know that while they are entitled to a safe home environment, where they have their basic needs met, not all children in the world are so lucky.
Giving Back to Society
One of the places where homeschool children can be taught about giving back to society is at old age homes. The homeschool teacher should explain how these veterans of life have lived long and meaningful years, contributing to the community. Now that they need help, it’s time for the younger generation to step up and give back the love and care that they lavished on them. Explain that while monetary contributions help, it is much more valuable to spend your time with these grandmas and grandpas. Make regular visits to such an institution near your home with the homeschool students.
Developing a Charitable Soul
Ever so often your homeschool students will outgrow clothes and toys that are simply laying around in the house. Help them develop a sense of charitable sharing with those less fortunate than them. Make them pack up everything that is in a relatively good condition and go donate it. You could take them to a salvation army store, an NGO in your area which you are aware of, or even an orphanage if one is close by. The idea is to teach the homeschool students the joy of giving without expectations.
