homeschool softwareOne of the main reasons why homeschool parents need to pay special attention to public speaking skills for their homeschool students is that they are not studying in a public environment. They may be able to express themselves beautifully in the homeschool classroom and they may be well accustomed to speaking to friends and family, but where do they get to address a large gathering of people aka the public? Here are some ways that you can get your homeschool student to face the public.

Poetry Recitation

Organize a poetry recitation evening for the local community. Throw it open to the whole neighborhood. If you have a community center you can host it in, even better. Help your children pick and rehearse a poem for the recitation. They will get a good idea of what it feels like to be on stage and speak. Since it is not a competition, there will be no additional pressure on them to win or do well.

Debate

There are open competitions organized by corporate firms that often offer a number of public speaking events. Elocution and debates are often part of this set of competitive events. You may have to pre- register for such an event so make sure you get all the details from the organizers before you get to the venue. Some of them have spontaneous debates on topics that are given on the spot, while others will have a general topic provided before hand on which you can prepare your own speech.

Presentation

Pick up a topic that your child feels strongly about and ask him or her to work out a multi media presentation stating the problem, and providing what they consider to be an adequate solution. It could be something as trivial as why they should be given more pocket money or something as serious as addressing the rising problem of lack of potable water in the world. Teach them to speak their mind and speak it well. Have them address an audience of family and friends to enhance their self worth and confidence. You could even take them to a city council meeting to show them how debates and presentations work in the real world!
