homeschooling high school

When your children are small it is easy to teach them just as much as you want to about any topic. However as they grow older they will want to learn in more depth about things that interest them. You may not always know everything about what they want to learn about, but you can still guide them on how to learn more.  Here are some tips that you may consider giving them.

Reliable sources of information

We live in the age of information and there are so many sources that you can pick from. However not all the sources of information are reliable. Help your teenaged homeschooling student understand this. Teach them how books from reputable publishers and websites with considerable quality standards are likely to give them more accurate information than an App on their smartphone. They should know the difference between an expert on the subject talking about something and a lay person giving his opinion on the same subject. Give them practice in finding at least three reliable sources of information for any subject they pick. Then cross check to see if all sources give the same information, that way they are sure they have the right information.

Document what they have picked up

Making notes while you study is the best way to understand and remember what you are reading. However that may not be the most interesting way for them to learn. So encourage them to come up with their own revision tactics. They can make a slide presentation about the topic that they are studying or record a podcast. Both these methods offer quick recall of what they have picked up about the topic. If there is an inclination they can make a mind map to memorize everything. It could be made into a poster that can be stuck on the wall for easy access. They can get as creative as they like to memorize their lessons.

A homeschooling parent is now no longer the teacher in the high school classroom, but a guide and mentor. You don’t have to monitor each step they take on the learning curve, just check the results after they are done.
