Look beyond the curriculum books that you have been using to expose your homeschool students to a whole new world. Exploring new horizons each week with a different field of focus can be a great idea. Here are some ideas based on what your children’s interest lie in.
Those interested in stories : Mythology
For young children stories can make an excellent learning tool. That is why so many homeschool books come in story format. However you can try expanding their knowledge by using stories from Mythology. It does not have to be limited to a specific country, use Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Native American, Persian, Russian, Japanese, or Indian mythology to source your stories. On the map show them the country from where you have sourced the day’s story before you recite it to them. This will have the added advantage of increasing their geography and world view. Pick a different country every day of the week.
Those interested in dramatics : Video Production
Some children love being in the spotlight. Let them enjoy playing producer, director, script writer and actor of their own video. Give them a topic that they can research in books or on the internet. It can be part of the curriculum as well. Now ask them to make a short five minute video using all the research material to explain the basic concepts of the topic given to them. Give them a digital camera to shoot the video over the week. Have a special family screening of the video that they produced at the end of the week with pop corn and soda!
Those interested in sports :Trivia Quiz Competition
If your homeschool students are interested in sports get them interested in the history and rules of the games. Pick up unusual sports from different countries to learn more about. Get more details on popular sports that they like to play. Have them develop a trivia question bank on sports over the week. Once they have about a hundred questions you can hold a Trivia Quiz Competition using family and friends as team members. You can even use a craft lesson to make a trophy for the winning team!
