Basics Come First
The flexibility afforded by homeschooling allows the homeschool teacher to tailor make the education for their homeschool students. The parents often taught the children only what they wanted to learn. In the past this was the reason that some homeschool students were brilliant in certain subjects but barely up to the mark in others.
Now as more regulations have come into place, basic education as defined by the Common Core makes it easy for the homeschool student to be competent in all subjects usually taught in public schools. The approach these days is to get the children to complete the basics and then move into areas of specific interest.
More Than the Textbooks
Homeschool classrooms can teach a lot more than just the textbooks of a subject. They are more interactive and can follow unit studies with a lot more ease. Adding extra resources to a topic of interest, can make it far more exciting to the homeschool student.
The homeschool teacher can add field trips, video channels, physical activities and a whole lot more based on what the child wishes to learn about a future profession. The idea is to expose the homeschool student to all that is possible in the field that they are considering.
Emphasis on Specific Subjects
It’s a good idea to make the homeschool students write down a list of professions that they might be interested in. Then against each profession ask them to put down the subjects that they will need to study. This allows them to understand, what they learn now, will help them later in their job. You can’t be a race car driver without knowing how an engine works.
It may be a good idea to focus on specific profession related subjects once a week for older children. Let the topics covered here be related to the job that they hope to do. Allow them to meet a professional in the field and get to know about what their day at work really is like. The more the child knows, the easier it will be for the child to make the right choice of profession.
