Taking a day off to celebrate the birthday of one of your homeschool students may not always be possible. However, there are many ways of making it a special day for your child without disrupting the homeschool schedule too much. Here are a few creative suggestions. Feel free to modify them to suit your homeschool classroom better.
The Hourly Gift
Allow the birthday child to feel remembered and special throughout the day. At every hour that you start a new topic, take a five minute break to present the birthday boy or girl with a gift wrapped token. It can be anything small, in fact the goodies may be things they actually need, like a new set of pencil colors or hair clips. Of course, you may want to add in things that are purely for fun. Also try and make the wrapping as pretty as possible and the unveiling of the gift as ceremonial as you can. It’s the little things like that which make the best memories for the child.
The Choice of Menu
Another way to honor the birthday of your homeschool student is to get their input on the food that they would like to eat for lunch and dinner. The whole family has to eat what they pick. This will make it easier on the homeschool parent to cook a single meal, while still ensuring that the homeschooled birthday child feels special. Of course it may require some modification in terms of balancing out the menu if the choice is something like just eating ice cream all day!
The Quality Time with Mom or Dad
Another special gift can be the gift of time given to the homeschool student by the parent he wants to spend more time one on one with. The other parent gets to babysit the rest of the siblings while the birthday child gets to go and do a preferred activity with their parent. This could be anything from watching a movie together or going off to a picnic in the park. The homeschool student again gets to pick what they want to do, within reasonable limits.
